Abstract. Mucin-type O-linked glycosylation is a fundamental post-translational modification that is involved in a variety of important biological processes. However, the lack of chemical tools to study mucin-type O-linked glycosylation has hindered our molecular understanding of O-linked glycans in many biological contexts. As noted above, the defining feature of mucin O-linked glycosylation compared to other types of glycosylation is the initial addition of GalNAc to Ser/Thr residues of protein substrates. 37 One useful group of metabolic inhibitors of mucin O-linked glycosylation utilizes GalNAc analogs as decoy primers that suppress elaboration of O-linked glycans. 50,51 These unnatural sugars exploit two 2005-11-01 Plasma membrane signaling mucin that promotes activation of the MAPK for the filamentous growth pathway. Prior to adherence to their target tissue, the first barrier that the streptococci encounter is the mucous layer of the respiratory tract. The present study was undertaken to characterize the interaction between mucin, the major glycoprotein component of mucus, and 1997-11-01 · Mucin-2.

Our research group is part of Mucin Biology Groups at the University of Gothenburg. We are one of few research labs in the world who study the function and regulation of membrane mucins in defending our gastrointestinal tract. 2018-01-15 · The major structural and functional component, mucin is a complex glycoprotein coded by about 20 mucin genes which produce a protein backbone having multiple tandem repeats of Serine, Threonine (ST repeats) where oligosaccharides are covalently O-linked. In collaboration with the wider Mucin Biology Groups cluster at the University of Gothenburg and both national and international partners, the laboratory seeks to develop new tools allowing the identification and characterisation of goblet cell-mediated defence systems. Mucin gels were rapidly colonized by heterogeneous bacterial populations, especially members of the Bacteroides fragilis group, enterobacteria, and clostridia. Intestinal bacterial populations growing on mucin surfaces were shown to be phylogenetically and metabolically distinct from their planktonic counterparts. Abstract.

Aberrant glycosylation occurs in essentially all types of cancers and results in increased sialylation. Thus, when the mucin MUC1 is expressed on cancer cells, it is decorated by multiple short, sialylated O-linked glycans (MUC1-ST).
